What is
Kakvei?
Kakvei is a tool that improves your Khmer typing experience by converting Khmer transliteration into Khmer script in real time and providing spell-check for Khmer text. It is free and available to all users, who sign up by clicking “Try Kakvei” above.
Kakvei History
The idea for Kakvei arose from the difficulties we faced when typing in Khmer. Through interviews and surveys with around two thousand Cambodian digital writers, we found that over 98% expressed frustration with the current typing system—mainly due to the large number of characters that are not efficiently organized on the keyboard and the need to switch between multiple keyboard layers while typing. Although the project initially began as a way to address our own challenges, it has since evolved into a mission to support thousands of Cambodians who face similar struggles. With a goal to improve the Khmer typing experience, we came together as a team to bring this vision to life. Our aim is to create a tool, available across various platforms—including both phones and computers—that delivers efficient and accurate Khmer transliteration, spell-checking, and grammar correction.

Our Achievement

SmartStart Young Innovator
Program Cycle 5
Our team was honored with the grand prize of 10,000 USD in funding and a fully funded trip to a regional technology conference for presenting our innovative solution aimed at addressing a critical social challenge in Cambodia, as part of the Smart Start Young Innovator Program. Selected from among fifty teams and over 250 participants, we developed a technology-driven project that combined creativity with practical application to support community development.
NICC Digital Funding Program
Our team was honored with 10,000 USD in funding from the National Incubation Center of Cambodia, along with server hosting support, to make our project publicly accessible and empower Cambodian authors in their daily digital writing through our Kakvei typing tools. Designed with transliteration and spell-correction features, Kakvei helps reduce barriers to Khmer typing and promotes more inclusive access to digital content creation.

BMC Cambodia Competition
Our team was honored with the grand prize of 3,000 USD from the BMC Cambodia Competition—a contest in which project proposals are carefully reviewed, and only those with strong social impact potential are awarded prize money as an incentive to push the project forward.
