What is
Kakvei?
Kakvei is a tool that improves your Khmer typing experience by converting Khmer transliteration into Khmer script and providing spell-check for Khmer text. It is free and available to all users, who can sign up by clicking “Try Kakvei” above.
Kakvei History
The idea for Kakvei arose from the difficulties we encountered when typing in Khmer. We have surveyed around a thousand Cambodian digital writers and found that more than 95% complained about the current typing system. We understand the frustration of wanting to use Khmer but being restricted by the inability to type it quickly and the inefficiency of creating Khmer documents that are free from mistakes. While the project began as a way to solve our own challenges, it has since grown into a mission to support the thousands of Cambodians who face similar struggles when typing in Khmer. With a shared goal of improving the Khmer typing experience, we came together as a team to make this vision a reality. Our aim is to create a tool available across various platforms, including both phones and computers, that provides efficient and accurate Khmer transliteration, spell checking, and grammar correction.

SmartStart Young Innovator
Program Cycle 5
Our team was honored with the grand prize of 10,000 USD and a fully funded trip to a regional technology conference for presenting an innovative solution aimed at addressing a critical social challenge in Cambodia, as part of the Smart Start Young Innovator Program. Selected from among fifty teams, we developed a technology-driven project that combined creativity with practical application to support community development.
NICC Digital Funding Program
Our team was honored with 10,000 USD in funding from the National Incubation Center of Cambodia, along with server hosting support, to make our project publicly accessible and empower Cambodian authors in their daily digital writing through our Kakvei typing tools. Designed with transliteration and spell correction features, Kakvei helps reduce barriers to Khmer typing and promotes more inclusive access to digital content creation.
